Who was Christina Yuna Lee ?

A New York City woman who had just gotten home from a night out Saturday night was followed to her apartment building where she was stabbed to death by a homeless man, police say.

Early Sunday morning, Christina Yuna Lee, 35, was dropped off at her building on Chrystie Street in Chinatown, police told WNBC.


Surveillance video revealed that a man followed her into the building, her landlord Brian Chin told WNBC.

“She opened the door and he walked in right behind her,” Chin told WNBC. “She never knew he was there.”


Statement

At 4:23 a.m. m., New York City Police Department officers responded to a call about a dispute in the building, said NYPD spokesman Sgt. Edward Riley said in a statement.

Two terrified young women across the hall from Lee heard her screaming and called 911, reports WNBC.Coworkers said Lee was an advocate for AAPI representation, reports CBS New York. “She was a leader in her company, leading diversity causes, inclusion causes,” said community activist Ben Wei.

Death

Emergency medical personnel pronounced Lee dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, the New York police said. Nash was arrested Monday, his eighth arrest since May 2021.


There does not appear to be any connection between Nash and Lee, and the attack may have been random, reports CBS New York. He had multiple stab wounds and it appears a kitchen knife was used on him.

Arrested and Charged

Lee moved to New York City from New Jersey last year. She graduated from Rutgers University in New Jersey and worked as a creative producer, according to CBS New York.

“She has done nothing wrong. The only mistake she made was moving to New York City…but our city allowed violence to take her life,” said Justin Yu, president of the China Consolidated Charitable Association. . “Crime has no consequences in this city.”

“We know that the Lee family lost a loved one and we share their grief,” he told CBS New York.

“I don’t want to jump to the conclusion that Christina is also a victim of a hate crime because the investigation is still pending,” Wong said. “But this is another Asian American who was brutally attacked and what’s worse is that she was killed in her own apartment. She just tears our community apart.”

Last month, Michelle Go, 40, a resident of the city’s Upper West Side, was fatally pushed onto the subway tracks. Go was a businesswoman who spent her last 10 years with the New York Junior League helping at-risk people get back on their feet, reports CBS New York.

Martial Simon, 61, faces murder charges for allegedly pushing Go, after first trying to push another woman.

In June of last year, another violent attack on an Asian-American woman was caught on camera in the city’s Chinatown. The video shows a man walking up to the woman and punching her in broad daylight.

The suspect was arrested and charged with assault as a hate crime and other charges, reports CBS New York.

And in May, a suspect approached two Asian-American women who were walking near Times Square and hit one of the women with a hammer, reports CBS News. That incident was investigated as a hate crime and the suspect, Ebony Jackson, was charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and threats.
