Who was Darius Campbell Danesh?

POP Idol contestant Darius Campbell Danesh has died at the age of 41, his family announced today.

The star, who went on to perform on stage, was found dead in her US apartment on August 11.


The cause of his death is unknown.

Statement

A statement issued today read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darius Campbell Danesh.


“Darius was found unconscious in bed in his apartment in Rochester, Minnesota on August 11 and was pronounced dead in the afternoon by the local medical examiner’s office.

“The local police department has confirmed that there were no signs of intent or suspicious circumstances. The cause of his sudden death is unknown at this time as medical tests continue.

“We ask that you respect our wishes for privacy at this time as we come to terms with the tragic loss of our son and brother.”


The Scottish singer-songwriter and actor, known as Darius Danesh when he made his first bid for fame on ITV’s Popstars in 2001, also appeared in the first ever Pop Idol, which was won by Will Young.

He then forged a successful stage career, appearing in Chicago as Billy Flynn in two production runs, as well as Guys And Dolls, Gone With The Wind and more on the West End.

He lived in the United States and found love with Canadian actress Natasha Henstridge, whose films include the sci-fi hit Species.

The couple married in 2011 at Rancho San Ysidro in Santa Barbara, California, but divorced a few years later.

In 2010, he spoke with Hello! magazine about a car accident in which he broke his neck.

Causes of Death


The singer was a passenger in a Porsche when he hit a wall at 70 mph after skidding in oil during a break in the sun in Spain.

After placing third on Pop Idol in 2010, he won the first series of ITV’s Popstar To Operastar competition, beating Bernie Nolan of the Nolan Sisters in a close final.

A few months after his victory on the ITV show, which featured Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón as judges, he landed his first major role in opera when he was cast in a new production of Carmen at the O2 Arena in London. London.

He took on the title role of the bullfighter Escamillo in the production, for a one-off performance that marked the first opera in the venue at the time.

In 2011, speaking of reprising the role of Chicago’s scheming lawyer Flynn, he said that he had based his portrayal of his character on his former Pop Idol mentor and judge Simon Cowell.

Campbell starred opposite Ugly Betty star America Ferrera in the musical set in prohibition-era Chicago, saying, “He’s a consummate businessman and a wonderful guy and there’s a lot of Simon Cowell in Billy Flynn in terms of the way he approaches things and I recognize that in terms of the character.”

He credited Cowell with persuading him to take on the role in Chicago in the first place.

He said: “I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had and all the opportunities it opened up and being able to call Simon Cowell a friend and being able to have dinner with him.”
