Who was Denisha Henry?
Denisha Henry, the 32-year-old mother of an eighth-grade student at Jensen Elementary Scholastic Academy in the East Garfield Park district of Chicago, died on September 24.
The day before, Shenitha Curry, 44, had died of pneumonia from COVID, with diabetes and hypertension as contributing factors. She was not vaccinated.
Soon after, the Chicago Teachers’ Union claimed at a rally that both mothers caught COVID from a child at the school, where 11 out of 17 classrooms were in quarantine.
But according to a Cook County Medical Examiner’s report obtained by Chicago City Wire on Monday, Henry actually died of chronic ethanolism – a term coroners use to describe someone who died of alcoholism.

Now, parents in the Chicago Public Schools system say the teachers’ union should be ashamed for misrepresenting her death in an effort to ridicule the school system for its handling of the pandemic.
‘My God, the burden they placed on those little children who lost their mothers. Telling them basically that they killed their mothers going to school,’ said one parent, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.
‘I am ashamed of them. This shows that they will stop at nothing to get what they want.
Causes of Death
Both mothers had children at Jensen Elementary in Chicago’s East Garfield Park district,
School officials reportedly knew Henry’s death was not COVID-related, but wouldn’t admit it, according to the Chicago City Wire, with one telling the outlet, ‘the only good thing that came out of this is that we now have proof of COVID for our students and teachers.’
But the deaths of Henry and Curry from COVID were widely reported in the Chicago media, as parents and members of the Chicago Teachers Union used their deaths to call for the school to be closed until better precautions could be taken, according to Block. Chicago Club.

They called for more testing, “robust vaccination programs in schools, and adequate staffing to meet the needs of students traumatized by the harsh consequences of the pandemic.”
In a press release announcing the September 28 Speak Out for Safety rally, the Chicago Teachers Union said, “COVID claimed the life [of] a 47-year-old school mother and a 32-year-old second mother died.” .
Shenitha Curry’s family promoted the claim at the rally, with her sister Jasmya Johnson saying: “If the protocol was in place, she would still be alive.”
GoFundMe
Johnson claimed in a GoFundMe she created for Curry after a contact tracer never contacted her after her daughter brought COVID home from school.
Johnson wrote that Curry “was very scared of COVID-19 and wouldn’t leave the house or want her children to leave the house to go to school.”
But, Johnson said, she “had no choice” but to send her children back to in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year under Chicago’s reopening plan.
“Her children of hers are facing burying her because they were forced to go to school,” the GoFundMe says.
“All of this could have been prevented if the proper safety protocols had been put in place and/or if the option to send your child back to school had been given, as is the case in suburban school districts.”
GoFundMe raised more than $6,000 for the Curry family.
