A North Miami man is facing a second-degree murder charge after police say he shot and killed an employee at a South Beach hotel overnight after the suspect tried to sneak into the hotel’s nightclub.
A man is facing a murder charge after police say he shot and killed an employee in the lobby of a popular Miami Beach hotel early Friday after he was denied entry to the hotel’s nightclub, police said. .
Miami Beach police said the shooting happened just after midnight at the Clevelander Hotel located at 1020 Ocean Drive.
Officer Ernesto Rodriguez, a Miami Beach police spokesman, said officers responded to a call of a shooting at the Clevelander Hotel at 1020 Ocean Drive shortly after midnight Friday.
Rodriguez said officers found Clevelander employee Dion David Moore, 50, of Miami Beach, shot more than six times. He was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to a police report, Brandon Kortez Burris, 29, tried to sneak into the Clevelander nightclub through the main lobby and was approached by Moore, who was assigned to work the front desk, after several unsuccessful attempts to get inside. The report says that Moore asked Burris to leave, which led to an argument.
Shootings
Burris then threw a punch at Moore and missed, police said. The report says that after Moore walked away from him, Burris pulled a pistol from his waistband and fired multiple shots at Moore, who collapsed.

Police said Burris fled the scene. The report says officers arrested him shortly after two witnesses identified him as the shooter.
Police said they found a gun, without a clip, in Burris’s waistband.
Management of the Clevelander Hotel released a statement about the shooting Friday afternoon.
Statement
“We are devastated by the tragedy that occurred in the lobby of the Clevelander Hotel at approximately midnight Thursday night,” the statement said. “One of our valued employees needlessly lost his life.”
The statement went on to say that management was “fully cooperating” with Miami Beach police.
“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all guests and employees of the Clevelander Hotel,” he said.
