The gunman shot two people in the parking lot

The Story County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened in the church parking lot.

“Approximately 6:51 p.m. m., the Story County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a man had shot two people in the Cornerstone Church parking lot,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement posted on Facebook.

“At this time, the Story County Sheriff’s Office can confirm that there are three people deceased, one of whom is the man identified as the shooter. There is no ongoing threat to the community. There will be no further updates at this time.”

Callers to 911 said a couple of the victims had been shot, according to Police Capt. Nicholas Lennie, speaking at a news conference. They said other people were inside the church at the time of the shooting.

A campus ministry program was taking place at the time of the shooting

According to KCCI-TV, the shooting occurred during Salt Company, described as a “church campus ministry program.”

Capt. Nick Lennie of the Story County Sheriff’s Office told KCCI:

“There was a program going on. We have other people within the church. We don’t have any other information at this time if anyone else was injured in this. We are working through the process of investigating this incident and speaking with others within the church.”

Police told a news conference that there was an immediate response. They confirmed that “a service was taking place” in the church when this happened. Police could not say if the shooter was ever inside the church.

Victims

Authorities have yet to reveal a motive.

“We’re going to be looking at eyewitness testimony,” Lennie said at the news conference. “What they saw, what they knew and if there was any connection to the victims’ shooter.”

The victims are two women and one man, according to Story County News.
