Who was Georgina Wild ?

A Perth grandmother has died of a suspected heart attack after she was forced to wait more than two hours for an ambulance.

Georgina Wild, 80, was pronounced dead by paramedics at her home in Ashby, Perth’s northern suburbs, shortly before 5am on Sunday.

Grandma had first called St John’s Ambulance Service at 2:30am complaining of chest pains with work marked Priority 1.

However, instead of 15 minutes, Ms. Wild was forced to wait almost two and a half hours for help, and the delay ultimately proved fatal.

Family

His devastated family was only notified of his death eight hours after their loved one was first discovered, following a call from police, 9NEWS reports.

The call center called the grandmother twice early Sunday morning to perform a wellness check and to inform her that no ambulances were available.

At 4 am, Ms. Wild did not answer the phone, and an operator left a message telling her that she was calling “just to check in.”

The 80-year-old man was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

His death follows an emergency alert to Perth residents on Sunday, the second in a week, to expect delays in calling triple zero.

The delays, caused by a 20 percent staffing shortage as well as an increase in calls, caused a third of Priority 1 patients to wait more than 15 minutes for help.

A United Workers Union survey of paramedics in February found that 76 percent were unsure of maintaining adequate service.

Several called for the service to be state-owned, and one paramedic admitted they feared both for the public and for his family.

Mrs. Wilds’s loved ones will be forced to wait for the results of an autopsy until they can bury the 80-year-old woman, while an independent investigation into her death is launched.

Health experts have responded to rising Covid-19 hospitalization rates by calling for the return of some restrictions, such as masks in closed settings.

As many as 30 paramedics were on leave for Covid-19 on Sunday, as hospitalizations topped 300 for the first time in state history.

St John Ambulance chief executive Michelle Fyfe said there were “no words” that could improve the situation but said the service had prepared for the increase.

“We have prepared as best we can,” said Ms. Fyfe.

We have all the resources available on the front lines.

Just before 9 a.m. Monday, the service announced that demand for ambulances had dropped in a post on its Facebook page.
