Who was Henry Patterson?
Henry Patterson, best known for writing The Eagle Has Landed under the pseudonym Jack Higgins, has died at the age of 92.
His publisher, HarperCollins, announced on April 9 that the author had passed away at his Jersey home, surrounded by his family.
Henry Patterson, known also by his pseudonym Jack Higgins, was a British author. He was one of the best-selling authors of popular thrillers and espionage novels. Patterson published 85 novels during his lifetime, including titles like Comes the Dark Stranger, Hell is Too Crowded, and To Catch a King, which together sold more than 250 million copies and were translated into 60 languages, according to his publisher.
Career
His biggest success was his 36th novel, The Eagle Has Landed, which sold 50 million copies and was adapted into a film starring Sir Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Jenny Agutter and Robert Duvall. It was also the first of his novels to feature the character of Irish gunslinger and poet Liam Devlin.
HarperCollins said that when his last novel came out, the 2017 Sunday Times bestseller The Midnight Bell, the staff referred to him simply as “The Legend.”

Patterson was born on July 27, 1929 in Newcastle and grew up in Belfast before his mother remarried and moved to Leeds. He underwent two years of national service before becoming a teacher, writing books in his spare time. He received an advance of £75 for his 1959 debut, Sad Wind From the Sea.
Between 1959 and 1974 his output was “prodigious,” said HarperCollins, publishing as many as three or four books a year. In the late 1960s, he began publishing under his pseudonym Jack Higgins, and the first of his many best-selling thrillers, The Savage Day and A Prayer for the Dying, were released in the early 1960s. 1970.
