Police in Raleigh, North Carolina, announced Friday morning that the five victims shot to death by a 15-year-old suspect included an off-duty officer going to work and a 16-year-old boy.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson identified the victims who died in Thursday night’s shooting as Officer Gabriel Torres, 29, Nicole Conners, 52, Mary Marshall, 35, Susan Karnatz, 49 and James Thompson, 16.

K-9 officer Casey Clark was injured in the incident but has since received treatment and has been released from the hospital.

Another surviving victim, identified as Marcille Gardner, 59, remained in critical condition.

Patterson said Torres was off duty but was on her way to work Thursday when she encountered the shooter.

Patterson did not name the 15-year-old suspect, but she said he was in critical condition at the hospital. The boss did not comment on a possible motive or future accusations.

The incident began around 5 p.m. when the shooter opened fire in the 6000 block of Osprey Cove Drive before reaching the Neuse River Greenway in a residential area northeast of downtown.

Police cordoned off the area and searched for the killer for hours before cornering him at a home near Old Milburnie Road around 9:37 p.m. and taken into custody.

It is currently unclear how the 15-year-old sustained the injuries that required his hospitalization.

“We are with you in this time of unspeakable anguish,” Governor Roy Cooper said at a news conference on Friday. “No one should feel this fear in their community. No one. As politicians, we cannot and do not want to turn our backs on what happened here.

Thursday’s rampage became the 25th massacre in 2022 in which victims were shot.
