Who was Jeff German ?

An accomplished investigative reporter from Las Vegas was stabbed to death just outside his home, and area police are now searching for his killer.

The stabbing of 69-year-old Jeff German was sparked by a fight with another person, police said. Officers found the Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter dead around 10:30 a.m. Saturday after responding to a 911 call.

The newspaper’s senior editor said staff were “devastated to lose Jeff.”

“He was the gold standard of the news business,” executive editor Glenn Cook said in a statement.

“It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without its many years of shining a bright light in dark places.”

Death

Police believe the deadly confrontation occurred the day before his body was found, the Las Vegas Journal-Review reported. The newspaper reported that a 911 caller said German’s body was found next to his house.

“LVMPD enacted its lead case protocol on Saturday in the homicide investigation,” the department said Sunday, according to the Review-Journal. “This brings together a variety of resources to maximize the investigative effort and apply a sense of urgency to the arrest of the suspect.”

German’s reporting uncovered three decades of organized crime and political corruption, the newspaper said. But Cook noted that German had not told newsroom leaders that he was concerned about his safety or that there were threats against him.

He started at the Review-Journal in 2010 after leaving the Las Vegas Sun.

Part of his reporting focused on exclusives after the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting, the deadliest in US history, in which 60 people were killed and hundreds more injured.

German was also the author of “Murder in Sin City: The Death of a Las Vegas Casino Boss,” a 2001 true crime book about the death of Ted Binion, the heir to the Horseshoe Club Fortune.
