Who was Mark Woolcock ?
An NHS employee who died of Covid-19 “didn’t feel safe” at work in the early days of the pandemic, his daughter said, and was worried about being exposed to the virus.
Mark Woolcock, 59, from Stratford, died on 20 April 2020 at Newham University Hospital in East London, where he had worked for more than 17 years, with lungs ‘full’ of covid.

His daughter Tania Woolcock told her Barking Town Hall inquest that Mr Woolcock, who had cared for discharged patients and taken them to their homes or nursing homes by ambulance, was “frustrated” by the mix of patients with covid and not covid in the hospital.
She recalled a phone conversation before her last shift, the night of March 22, 2020, where she said she had picked up her own personal protective equipment (PPE).
She said in a statement: ‘Dad was not happy going into hospital wards with Covid-19 patients without any protection.
“Dad told me that he was not provided with PPE by patient transport services.”
Ms Woolcock, a social worker, added that she felt her father felt “a little anxious” when he talked about her work and “didn’t feel safe at work”.
She also told the inquest that Mr. Woolcock “didn’t seem comfortable” with the “setup of getting patients off the wards” but was more concerned about his safety at work.
His daughter called him the day after his shift, which she believes was the start of a scheduled week-long break, and said she was “concerned” that he had a stuffy nose.
She said: “Given the environment he worked in, I always had it in my mind that he might have been exposed to Covid, but I initially agreed with what his reason was, which was that he was probably just a cold. .
But within a few days, Woolcock also began to suffer from fever, cold sweats, loss of taste and smell, and aggressive hiccups.
He had said that he was sick and that he would not return to work over the weekend.

Ms. Woolcock said that she would have to “get things” out of the father from him, as regular calls with him became a challenge because she was not speaking clearly, but she did not want to create a scandal.
Death
In a video call, he saw Woolcock slumped on the bed and sweating profusely.
He was told by the inquest that he was gasping for breath on April 3. Mrs. Woolcock called 999 and after getting through on a second try, her father was taken to hospital and admitted.
She was unable to see her father due to Covid restrictions, but Ms Woolcock said communication with the hospital was “difficult”, and updates on her condition were “a bit rushed”.
She said she feared he might have contracted Covid-19 from repeated exposure to patients who had the virus because a consultant told her his lungs were “full” of Covid-19 and that he had a high viral load.
Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, investigated Mr Woolcock’s death, as did the Health and Safety Executive.
A press release from law firm Bindmans LLP said: “As part of this role, he should not have come into contact with suspected or Covid-19 positive patients.”

The investigation, which will last until March 4, will look at the systems put in place at the hospital to try to keep Mr Woolcock and other employees safe.
