Who was Nathan Marcus?

An inmate from San Joaquin County died after being attacked in the recreation yard of a Northern California prison, authorities said Sunday.


Staff used chemical agents to quell the incident after the attack Saturday at California State Prison, Sacramento, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.

Despite live-saving measures, Nathan Marcus was pronounced dead shortly after 2:30 p.m., the statement said.


Investigation


Two fellow inmates, Tyler Yates and Gregory Roach, are suspected in the death, which is being investigated as a homicide, authorities said. Yates and Roach have been moved to a segregation unit during the investigation.

Marcus, 33, was sentenced to state prison on February 26, 2013, from San Joaquin County, to serve a four-year sentence for evading/attempting to evade the peace officer while driving recklessly as a second attacker and possession of a controlled substance. up for sale as a second striker, the agency said. While incarcerated, Marcus was sentenced on August 18, 2016 in Kings County to serve a six-year sentence for possession/manufacturing of a deadly weapon by an inmate as a second attacker.

Yates, 27, was sentenced to San Diego County State Prison on Aug. 21, 2017 to serve an eight-year sentence for first-degree robbery and assault with force likely to result in serious bodily injury as the second attacker.


Roach, 33, was sentenced to a San Diego County state prison on October 15, 2019 to serve a 12-year sentence for assault with force likely to inflict great bodily injury as a second attacker and inflicting great bodily injury.
