The fugitive was fleeing criminal charges in Utah and Ohio, and faked his death in order to avoid prosecution, the Utah County Attorney’s Office told the Providence Journal.

“He has been detained and the Utah County Attorney’s Office is working with federal and international agencies to extradite Mr. Rossi to Utah,” the agency said in a statement.

Alahverdian is a suspect in several s*xual assault cases in Utah and across the United States and is also accused of defrauding $ 200,000 from his former adoptive mother in Ohio and $ 60,000 from Kathryn Heckendorn, his ex-wife, the Providence Journal reported.

Weeks before his “death” in February 2020, Alahverdian urged local Rhode Island reporters to write about his impending passing, stating that his crusade work against the child welfare system made him newsworthy, said the medium.

When reporters did not write about it, he was angered, the outlet said.

An obituary written about Alahverdian’s “death” called him a “warrior” for children and stated that his last words were “fear not and run into the bliss of the sun.”

“At first I didn’t believe it,” Heckendorn told the outlet about the time a Utah public safety officer called to tell him that Alahverdian had been captured.

“I said this has to be Nick; he probably hired someone to contact me to analyze the situation, because that is the very special kind of deception that he would do. ”

Alahverdian faces extradition proceedings in the UK, but it is unclear when he will be returned to the United States.
