The scene of the accident showed the mangled remains of Vera and Reye’s bikes lying side by side, twisted wheels and bits of twisted metal strewn across the green paint of the bike lane, and two pairs of sunglasses crooked on the pavement. .

The driver’s Jeep SUV was also damaged, his hood crumpled, his headlights went out and his windshield shattered.

Police say the driver was cooperative and remained with police for several hours at the crash site before being released on citations.

Vera leaves behind two teenage sons and Reyes leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter.

Concerns for the safety of cyclists on the Rickenbacker Causeway arose 10 years ago after a hit-and-run bicyclist was killed. Rumble strips were installed along the bike lane of the roadway in response to the accident.

Three years later, another cyclist was killed by a car and the lanes were painted with bright green paint.

Safety advocates are now pushing for considerably more substantial measures to be put in place on the roadway.

Local safety advocate Frankie Ruiz told CBS 4 Miami that he is advocating for a barricade that would completely separate the bike lane from the road.

‘I think that idea is a true separation, that there is a protected lane for cyclists and pedestrians. Because right now all we have are crinkled strips and green paint.
