                          Oriana Pepper Biography

Who was Oriana Pepper ?

A trainee commercial airline pilot has died after a mosquito bit her and she developed an infection that spread to her brain, an inquest has heard.

Oriana Pepper, 21, from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, had passed her theory exams at the easyJet program in Oxford with flying colors and had gone to Belgium to get her instrument qualifications.

While she was in Antwerp, a mosquito bit her on the forehead, in her right eye, and it looked swollen and infected, she told Wednesday’s hearing in Ipswich.

She attended the accident and emergency department of a hospital on July 7, 2021 and was prescribed antibiotics.

Death

Miss Pepper was taken back to the hospital two days later by her boyfriend James Hall after she collapsed.

She died in hospital three days later, on July 12, 2021.

Suffolk Chief Coroner Nigel Parsley recorded a narrative conclusion, saying that Miss Pepper died “as a result of a severe infection caused by an insect bite to the forehead”.

Her medical cause of death was listed as septic emboli to the brain, which are blood vessel blockages, with an infection from a bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus and an insect bite to the forehead also contributing.

Mr Parsley said: ‘An infection has entered Oriana’s skin after an insect bite.

“Then it entered the carotid artery in her neck and caused septic emboli in her brain.”

Parents

Addressing Miss Pepper’s parents, Tristan and Louisa Pepper, who attended the inquest, the coroner said: “I have never seen a case like this before.”

“It’s just one of those things that is such an unfortunate tragedy for a young girl who clearly had a wonderful career and life ahead of her.”

In a statement read during the investigation, Pepper said her daughter “loved nothing more than to fly with her father and her brother Oliver, also a trainee commercial pilot.”

She said her daughter described flying as “having an office in the sky among the clouds.”

She added: “She had met someone she loved, she was training to be a commercial pilot and she was fulfilling her dreams.”

Miss Pepper’s boyfriend

Miss Pepper’s boyfriend, James Hall, who met her in Phoenix, Arizona, where she completed her private and commercial pilot’s licenses, said they were “bitten multiple times with no reaction” after arriving in Antwerp on May 20.

“The locals assured us that it was normal for the area and the time of year,” he said.

But later, Ms. Pepper had a reaction to a bite and went to the emergency room on July 7 after her swelling “significantly worsened,” Hall said.

He said they “were told that she had an infection, probably from the mosquito bite” and prescribed oral antibiotics.

On July 9 she collapsed, she “was delirious and had difficulty speaking”, so Mr. Hall took her back to A&E.

Miss Pepper, who had a twin brother, Oscar, and an older brother, Oliver, died with her parents at her bedside.

Her mother said after the investigation that, in memory of Miss Pepper, they had “set up a small scholarship to encourage other female pilots” to enter the profession, working with the British Women Pilots Association.

“That’s a positive thing about her life,” she said.
