Who was Rab Wardell ?
Mountain biker Rab Wardell tragically died in his sleep at the age of 37.
The Glaswegian passed away just two days after winning the elite men’s title at the Scottish MTB XC Championship.
Rabbi Wardell has died at the age of 37.
Wardell had appeared on BBC Scotland on Monday night after his victory against all odds.
Family
The Scottish Cross Country Association wrote in a heartfelt statement: “Our deepest condolences to his friends, family and loved ones.
“He will be truly missed by our community and his determination, talent and friendship will live on in all of our hearts and memories.
“I’m sure many will write more eloquent words, but RIP Rab. Our champion, our inspiration, our friend.”
Statement
Another statement from British Cycling read: “Everyone at British Cycling is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Rab Wardell.
“Rab was a brilliant rider, friend and ambassador for our sport and will be greatly missed by many. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends of his at this incredibly difficult time.”

Fans flocked to pay tribute to Wardell following the shocking news of his passing.
One wrote: “Rab taught my kids how to ride many moons ago. He was always fantastic with them.
“I’m in shock and only knew him a little, so my heart goes out to his friends and family. I can’t imagine what they’re going through.”
While a second tweeted in tribute: “This is amazing, a truly honest guy who loved to ride a bike and many others who did. Your name and accomplishments will never be forgotten. Ride easy.”
A third added: “Heartbreaking. I’m so sorry to everyone who knew and loved him. Too young, too soon.”
Former Scottish cyclist David Millar tweeted: “So sad to hear @RabWardell left us. Really hard to fathom.”
Wardell won the Scottish MTB XC Championship last weekend despite having to overcome three punctures during the race, such was his ability.
His victory at Kirroughtree Forest was described as a “show of incredible endurance on the part of British Cycling.
