She was best known for her roles in Soap and Charmed.
The husband of the veteran stage and screen actress, James L. Conway, confirmed to Deadline that Balding passed away on July 18 in Park City, Utah.
Her cousin Caroline Williams tweeted to pay her respects, writing, “While we weren’t close as adults, she was a profound influence on my curiosity about show business and acting.
“Mother, wife, actress. She did it all.
Family
On Soap, Balding played the recurring character Carol David, a lawyer and mother of Jodie Dallas’ son.
Carol was a key character in the controversial daytime skit during the show’s first two seasons on ABC from 1977 to 1979.

The lead role was groundbreaking because it saw Carol seduce and conceive a baby with Jodie, who was one of the first openly gay characters on television at the time.
Balding continued her success with a role in the 1979 ABC sitcom Makin’ It.
She was also known for playing Phoebe’s boss, Elise Rothman, on Charmed, which aired between 1998 and 2006. The native of Little Rock, Arkansas, she had worked as a stage actress in Chicago before coming to Hollywood.
Her other notable television credits include Melrose Place, 90210 Beverly Hills, and Starsky and Hutch.
She also appeared in the horror films Silent Scream (1979) and The Boogens (1980), where she met the director and her future husband James.
Her last film role was the 2005 drama Yesterday’s Dreams, but she was known primarily as a television actress, racking up dozens of credits throughout the ’80s and ’90s.
Balding leaves behind her daughters Sarah and Kathleen, and her grandchildren.
