Movie icon Robbie Coltrane has died at the age of 72, his agent said.

Coltrane gained worldwide recognition as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series and as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.


He was appointed an OBE in the 2006 New Year Honors by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the theatre.

The condition, which causes the joints to become painful and stiff, has forced Coltrane to rely on a wheelchair as he awaits life-changing knee surgery in the US.

Coltrane married Rhona Gemmell on December 11, 1999. The couple has two children: Spencer (b. 1992) and Alice (b. 1998). Coltrane and Gemmell separated in 2003 and later divorced.

Coltrane suffered from osteoarthritis.

During the campaign for the 2014 Scottish independence referendum, Coltrane expressed conditional support for independence, stating “I would like to see independence eventually, but only an independent Labor Scotland”.

Coltrane died at a hospital in Larbert, Scotland, on Oct. 14, 2022, his agent said.

Coltrane began acting in his early twenties, taking the stage name Coltrane (after jazz saxophonist John Coltrane) and working in theater and comedy. He appeared in the first stage production of John Byrne’s The Slab Boys, at Edinburgh’s Traverse Theater (1978).His comedic chops brought him roles on the series The Comic Strip Presents (1982-2012)(in 1993 he directed and co-wrote the episode “Jealousy” for series 5), as well as the comedy show Alfresco. .
