THE beloved actor was a jack-of-all-trades, as comfortable playing professional sports as he was behind – and in front of – the cameras.
Fans were left devastated after hearing that Carl Weathers, who spent decades in the entertainment industry, passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
Who was Carl Weathers?
Carl Weathers was an American actor, director, and former professional football player.
Weathers was born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He grew up as a multi-sport athlete, involved in boxing, football, gymnastics, soccer, wrestling, and judo.
While attending San Diego State University, he helped the San Diego State Aztecs win the 1969 Pasadena Bowl.
After graduating with a degree in Theatre Arts, Weathers signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent in 1970.
While playing as a linebacker with the Raiders, and spending three years with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League, Weathers was also a part-time college student.
He attended San Francisco State University, graduating with a degree in drama in 1974.
After retiring from football that same year, Weathers went on to pursue a Hollywood career.
He spent nearly five decades in the industry, appearing in movies, television shows, and animated films, and lending his voice and likeness to several video games.
On Friday, February 2, 2024, Weathers’ family revealed that he had passed away.
As reported by Deadline, the family released a statement to the media.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement.
“He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024…Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life.”
“Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations.”
“He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend,” they added.
Was Carl Weathers married?
Carl Weathers may have found success in Hollywood, but he wasn’t always so lucky in his dating life.
Weathers had some rocky relationships over the years, and was married – and divorced – three times.
His ex-wives include Mary Ann Castle, Rhona Unsell, and Jennifer Peterson.
He married Castle in 1973, and the duo had two children together, both boys.
They ultimately split a decade later, calling it quits in 1983.
By 1984, Weathers married to Rhona Unsell.
While the couple never had any children, they were together for over two decades.
In 2006, after 22 years of marriage, the couple ultimately divorced.
Weathers married his third wife, Jennifer Peterson, just one year later.
The couple officially tied the knot on March 24, 2007.
Peterson, a film producer, was the only woman Weathers married that was in the entertainment business and Hollywood industry.
Weathers’ third marriage was also his shortest, lasting around two years.
By the end of 2009, Weathers and Peterson officially divorced.
The actor never remarried.
After his third divorce, Weathers was often spotted with Christine Kludjian, known for her role in The Chronicle.
The duo attended several high-profile events together, including the 74th Annual Golden Globes in 2017 and the premiere of one of Weathers’ most recent acting roles, The Mandalorian.
However, it remains unclear whether he was dating anyone at the time of his death in 2024.
Weathers is survived by his two sons from his first marriage, Matthew Brandon and Jason Anthony Weathers.
