Ronnie Spector, the pioneering lead singer of the 1960s girl group the Ronettes, has died.

A statement from his family said he passed away at age 78 “after a brief battle with cancer.”

“Ronnie lived his life with a twinkle in his eye, a brave demeanor, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on his face,” the statement said.


“She was filled with love and gratitude. Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence of her will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”

Born in 1943 in Manhattan as Veronica Yvette Bennett, she rose to fame in 1964 at just 18 years old while performing with her older sister and her cousin.

With their beehive hairstyles and liberal use of mascara, the multiracial group caught the eye of record producers while performing in clubs in New York.

Married Phil Spector

In 1968, the lead singer married Phil Spector, who pioneered the “wall of sound” recording technique. They were married for six years and adopted three children together before divorcing.

Mrs. Spector married Mr. Spector the following year. In her memoir, she wrote that he had essentially held her prisoner during her relationship, surrounding her with watchdogs and taking her shoes off, among other erratic and psychologically abusive behaviors.

“I was getting drunk so I could go to rehab, just to get out of the house,” Spector told The New York Times in a 2000 interview.

Career

Throughout the 1970s, in an attempt to rebuild her career without her ex-husband, Ms. Spector collaborated with Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Billy Joel, and Bruce Springsteen. She but she did not find great success again until 1986, when her duet with Eddie Money, “Take Me Home Tonight”, reached number 4 on the Billboard Singles Chart and earned a Grammy nomination.

Later, Ms. Spector released solo music, including for the underground independent label Kill Rock Stars, and she staged a one-woman biographical show, “Beyond the Beehive,” in 2012.

He played a regular Christmas show at the BB King Blues Club and Grill in New York, and released a Christmas EP in 2010. For longtime fans, it was a keepsake from Phil Spector’s classic 1963 Christmas album, “A Christmas Gift for You, ”in which the Ronettes sang“ Frosty the Snowman, ”“ Sleigh Ride, ”and“ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.

Spector is survived by her second husband and her manager, Jonathan Greenfield, and two children.

Causes of death

He died after “a brief battle with cancer,” according to a statement from his family, which gave no further details.
