His parents said in a GoFundMe : “We decided to go hiking, we walked down the path to a river, above the waterfall.”
Officers sent their condolences to the family on Monday and warned the public to be careful when visiting the site.
Sheriff Chip Hall said: “First of all, our prayers are with the Newswanger family as they mourn the loss of this precious little boy.
‘With the onset of spring weather, we must remember the dangers associated with many scenic areas in the region, such as waterfalls.
“While it is beautiful to view from a safe distance, venturing closer to the falls for any reason carries tremendous danger.

“Always remain a safe distance, follow current safety precautions and warnings, and watch the waterfalls from designated viewing areas.”
Her parents shared a heartbreaking photo of the smiling girl with her sister Tania in a GoFundMe yesterday.
They said: ‘We decided to take a walk, we walked along the path to a river, above the waterfall.
‘Nevaeh was playing in the sand nearby and slipped and fell into the water. We desperately tried to rescue her from her, but the current was so strong that she swept her down the river and over the falls where the angels caught her.
‘She is now our precious angel, so radiant in the presence of God. Her name is heaven spelled backwards. She was truly a piece of heaven to all who knew her.’
The family had decided to go on a hike when Newswanger took a break from working at a construction site 25 miles away in Oconee County, South Carolina.
911 was called when the tragedy occurred and first responders from Jackson, Transylvania, Haywood, Henderson and Oconee County rushed to the waterfall.
But the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said: “Just before sundown Sunday, rescuers located the dead and trapped boy in an area of the waterfall.”
