A WORLD CHAMPION bodybuilder died after breaking his neck while attempting to perform his trademark backflip.

Sifiso Thabethe was only 23 years old and had a promising career as a strongman ahead of him when he tragically lost his life.

Sifiso Thabete broke his neck after trying to perform the trick in a competition in South Africa.

His horror stunt was captured on video as he jumped into the air in front of the crowd.
He then slammed into the back of his head and neck.

Video

The horrific video showing the moment the South African star got hurt has resurfaced online after the tragedy in August 2017.

It shows that the world champion over 75kg had been playing for the crowd before a competition in Umlazi, south of Durban.

Dressed only in a black trunks and socks while showing off his inflated physique, he walked onto the mat.

Gesturing to the crowd as he raised his arms, he then launched himself into the air in a stunt that would prove fatal.

Sifiso shot up into the air with an incredible height, and then moved to twist his body in a spinning spin.

But he couldn’t turn around and instead he crashed into the mat above his head.

He bounces and then lurches forward onto his side before going limp in the video, which is too harrowing to show in its entirety.

Two trainers rushed to help him as he lay almost motionless on the tatami in front of the horrified audience.

Death

More doctors then approach in an attempt to revive the injured bodybuilder, flexing his legs and checking his neck.

Sifiso was rushed to hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

It is believed that his socks caused him to slip on the mat, meaning that he was unable to complete his signature stunt.

Previously, he had performed the signature move just a few weeks earlier during his victorious performance at the IFBB Muscle Mulisha Junior Under-23 Grand Prix.

Bodybuilding magazines at the time hailed him as a “young man with a bright future” as he was destined for greatness.

His sad story is often shared as a cautionary tale.

And his Instagram page remains active, with many commenters continuing to pay tribute to him even five years later.

Wayne Price told South Africa’s News24 that the change was Sifiso’s “signature” move.

He said: “We suspect, because this time he was wearing socks, that he either slipped or didn’t have enough momentum and landed horribly on his head.”
