Football fans will be able to drink traditional English ales onboard a cruise ship in Qatar during the World Cup.
Unlike its neighbour Dubai, Qatar is not used to hosting overwhelming numbers of tourists and doesn’t have enough hotels to host the massive influx of guests. As a result, organisers have come up with some innovative solutions.
The Masters of the Sea pub onboard cruise ship MSC Europa will be one of the few places fans can enjoy a beer in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup, which begins next Sunday, November 20.
Qatar has strict laws on drinking alcohol, including a zero-tolerance policy for drinking or appearing drunk in public.
The Masters of the Sea pub is in the style of a traditional English pub – and will offer a bespoke range of signature craft beers that will be brewed at sea onboard the ship.

As the boat is off the shore of Qatar, fans will be able to have a drink and enjoy themselves.
The ‘oceanic’ beers are made using desalinated sea water, offering a pilsner, a bitter and a wheat beer alongside bar snacks.
Former Manchester United and England player Gary Neville visited Qatar ahead of the tournament and asked organisers about what fans can expect.
On Neville’s show The Overlap, one fan said they would ‘absolutely’ recommend the booze cruise as a way to enjoy the football.
The fans, from Bury in Manchester, added they were ‘loving it’ after being onboard for a week.
A huge new cruise terminal has been built with two new liners to help house visitors.
The luxury £1billion cruise liner MSC Europa, which houses the pub, usually costs £2,434.80 for nine nights.

It offers six swimming pools, 30 bars and cafes, a cinema and the tallest slide on any ship in the world.
The liner can host 6,350 guests and 1,700 staff members and is reportedly where footballers’ WAGs are due to stay for the duration of the tournament.
Qatar is a strict Muslim country and drinking alcohol is prohibited except in high-end hotels and a dedicated open-air ‘fan zone’ along the seafront.
Thanks to a ‘sin tax’ applied to all alcohol sales during the tournament, drinks in the fan zone are expected to cost £13 a pint, with prices in the top hotels rising to an eye-watering £80 a beer during the semi-finals and final.
It is an offence to drink alcohol in public. British nationals have previously been detained under this law and drinking in a public place could result in a prison sentence and fines.

Advice on the UK government website urges supporters not to carry alcohol around with them while they are visiting.
Supporters should also avoid buying duty-free booze as importing alcohol is illegal.
As a result, World Cup chiefs are expecting fewer fans from the UK than usual.
Only around 3,000 to 4,000 Three Lions supporters are expected – where 100,000 would attend a tournament elsewhere in the globe.
The 2022 World Cup has been much-criticised for over a decade since Qatar was awarded it back in 2010.

Homosexuality is illegal and there are questions over women’s rights and the way workers are treated.
There have been suggestions that those working to organise the tournament have been denied food and water and have not been paid – as well as reports of workers’ deaths.
During his trip to Qatar, Neville, 47, highlighted the poor conditions the workers have been subjected to.
For the first time in its 92-year history, the cup’s journey to the Middle East means that it will be held in winter – in the middle of the Premier League season.
