SINGAPORE: A brand new variant of job rip-off has seen 13 victims lose not less than S$38,000 since January, stated the police on Monday (Mar 7).

In these scams, victims can be invited by way of messaging apps resembling WhatsApp and Telegram to take part in jobs that may permit them to earn commissions by reviewing journey sights and packages. 

Scammers impersonating job recruiters would ship the victims unsolicited messages, claiming to be recruiting for jobs that supply excessive fee for reviewing of journey sights and packages. 

To reinforce the ruse, scammers would impersonate Anywhr, a legit journey firm.

Those who expressed curiosity within the jobs can be instructed to enroll in accounts on the spoofed web sites supplied by the scammers, and required to high up their accounts with cash with a view to overview the sights and earn commissions. 

The scammers would supply victims with financial institution accounts belonging to unknown people for fee to be made. 

“Victims would initially be convinced that their work was legitimate as they were able to withdraw the commissions and would thus continue to top up their accounts as directed by the scammers,” stated the police.

“Victims would only realise that they had been scammed when they were unable to withdraw money from their accounts.”

Members of the general public are suggested to undertake the following precautionary measures:

  1. Do not settle for doubtful job gives that supply profitable returns for minimal effort. If it’s too good to be true, it in all probability is
  2. Always confirm the authenticity of the job supply with the corporate providing the job
  3. Never ship cash to anybody whom you have no idea or haven’t met in individual.
