Hey readers! Whether you’re here for the first time or coming back after joining us for last month’s inaugural SELF Well-Read Book Club, I’m thrilled to welcome you here. As a quick refresher, our book club will read a wide range of stories together—covering everything from fitness, to mental health, to relationships, and more. (Last month, we read Alison Désir’s Running While Black: Finding Freedom in a Sport That Wasn’t Built for Us. If you missed it, I highly recommend checking it out now—it’s never too late for a good book, especially one that is both emotional and educational. If you want a small preview, you can take a look at an exclusive excerpt we published here.)

That said, I’m pleased to announce our second SELF Well-Read Book Club selection: Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey. In Rest Is Resistance, Hersey, an artist, activist, and theologian known for her work founding The Nap Ministry, calls for a world in which productivity is not the ultimate goal, but rest and connection are at the top of our priority lists instead.

Throughout the book, you’ll walk through Hersey’s philosophy behind the power of rest: How to create spaces for yourself to not only rest, but dream; and why doing so is important for our bodies and minds. As Hersey writes in the introduction: “Sleep deprivation is a public health issue and a spiritual issue… We will not be able to interrupt the machine of grind culture alone. We need each other in more ways than we are allowed to believe. This work is about radical community care.”

Who is this book for? Folks tired of hustle culture; busy parents who get no time or space for themselves; caregivers; and anyone who, for any reason, has a hard time pressing pause and is so damn tired that they feel it in their bones. Really, it’s for you. And we think you’re going to love it.
