TV chef Dave Myers has died at the age of 66, two years after revealing he had been diagnosed with cancer.

The one half of the TV cooking duo The Hairy Bikers, from Barrow-in-Furness, has never specified what type of cancer he had following the announcement that he was receiving treatment in May 2022.

In a post on X on Thursday, Si King, who co-presented a number of television cookery series with Myers, wrote: “I’m afraid I bear some sad news. Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.

“Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home. All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.

“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow.

“I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you God’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

In his latest health update, Myers shared that doctors diagnosed him with anorexia during his ongoing cancer treatment.

The TV star also previously said his chemotherapy treatment caused him to suffer loss of balance, which left him worried he would be unable to ride a motorcycle on the show again.

The 66-year-old even briefly took a break from work before filming the latest show, The Hairy Bikers Go West, which sees them travel west across Britain from Scotland to Devon.

The pair were known for travelling around the UK and the world on their bikes, sampling and cooking food from different regions.

In May 2022, Myers revealed he was receiving treatment for cancer , but he refused to disclose publicly what cancer he specifically had.

Speaking about his decision to keep the information private on an episode of Hairy Bikers: Coming Home For Christmas, he said: “I’ve never gone on about what sort of cancer I’ve got because I feel like that’s my business.

“I don’t want newspapers to run a lottery on how long I’ve got to live. That’s not what I want. I felt so guilty because of the effects it’s having on my wife Lil.”

While cancer symptoms usually depend on the type of cancer you have, Cancer Research UK lists the following as “general” signs to look out for:

  • Very heavy night sweats or fever
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained bleeding or bruising
  • Unexplained pain or ache
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Unusual lump or swelling anywhere.

These symptoms don’t guarantee you have the potentially deadly condition, but spotting any changes that are not normal for you warrants speaking to your doctor.

King added that he will miss Myers and “the bond and friendship” they shared “every day”.
