The least calorific supermarket Easter eggs have been revealed – as the sweet treat filled holiday approaches.

Analysing 90 offerings across shops in the UK, sports and nutrition site Bulk (www.bulk.com/uk/protein.html) unveiled which festive options contained the least calories in a list of 20.

Taking the top spot is Moo Free’s Bunnycomb egg with a total of 454 kcal per pack. 

It’s followed by the Kinder Surprise Egg, which contains 579 kcal. Elsewhere, selections from Sainsbury’s, Thorntons and Bounty are also included.

Calorie content, grams of sugar in the whole egg, and any additional chocolate or sweets included in the pack were considered. 

A spokesperson for Bulk however stressed that enjoying some chocolate over Easter is ‘unlikely to completely ruin any weight loss goals you may have’.

‘Weight gain tends to happen over a much longer window of time, so even if you are eating over your body’s daily caloric intake for several days, you are unlikely to observe any noticeable fat gain,’ they explained.

‘However, if you still intend to be mindful of your chocolate consumption this Easter, consider buying several smaller Easter eggs rather than one large one.

‘This way, you can eat the whole Easter egg in one sitting, without feeling as guilty, while still satisfying your sugar cravings.’

1. Moo Free Bunnycomb Easter Egg (85g), £4.50 – 454 kcal

The supermarket Easter egg with the least number of calories, according to Bulk, is the Moo Free Bunnycomb Easter Egg – with a total of 454 kcal per pack.

Weighing in at just 85g, it includes a dairy free hollow egg with cinder toffee pieces.

But experts revealed that ‘the whole Easter egg product was also found to contain 40.8g of sugar, which is 36% more than the recommended daily allowance of 30g, advised by the NHS’.

‘The Easter egg, contains 53.6g of sugar in total, the third lowest amount of sugar of any Easter egg included in the analysis,’ Bulk found.

3. Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Belgian Dark Chocolate Large Easter egg (150g), £4.50 -794 kcal

Coming in at number three was Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Belgian dark chocolate large egg.

It contains 794 calories per pack.

The product features a 150g hollow dark chocolate egg.

The design also includes grooves along the chocolate shell. 

‘The total product contains a total of 62.4g of sugar,’ the analysis revealed.

This was, reportedly, ‘the fifth lowest amount of any Easter egg included in the list’.

4. NOMO Free From Caramel filled Easter Egg and bar (148g), £6.50 – 815 kcal

The whole egg contains 619 calories, while the additional confectionary also contains 196 calories

NOMO Free From caramel filled egg and bar is the fourth least calorific Easter egg, with a total of 815 calories per pack.

This dairy-free offering comes with a caramel-flavoured hollow milk chocolate egg as well as a milk chocolate bar with a vegan caramel filling.

The whole egg contains 619 calories, while the additional confectionary contains 196 calories

According to Bulk, it has a total of 51.3g of sugar, which is ‘the second lowest amount of any Easter egg included in the list’.

5. Thorntons Milk Chocolate Dinosaur Easter Egg (151g), £3 – 823 kcal

Thorntons Milk Chocolate Dinosaur Easter Egg is the fifth least calorific, with a total of 823 calories per pack, the analysis found.

The egg – made from milk and white chocolate – contains 81.5g of sugar, ‘more than double the recommended daily allowance’.

It comes as sales of Easter eggs have slumped by 600,000 in backlash against rising prices and shrinkflation.

The fall equates to a reduction of 12 per cent compared to the equivalent period last year and amounts to a £200,000 fall in sales.

The details emerged following revelations by the Daily Mail and Which? that manufacturers are both shrinking the size of their Easter eggs and pushing up prices.

Industry leaders blame rising costs and climate change, which have hit the cocoa harvests in West Africa.

This year, the large Mars milk chocolate egg is down from 252g to 201g, a reduction of 20 per cent, yet the price has remained the same at £3.

The Twix milk chocolate Easter egg is down from 246g to 200g and the Galaxy Minstrels Easter egg has been cut from 234g to 192g.

Last year, Cadbury was selling the Dairy Milk Fruit and Nut Inclusions Chocolate egg with a weight of 532g. This year, the closest equivalent weighs in at 400g.

Nestle’s Smarties Orange Easter egg large is down from 226g to 188g, and the Yorkie Milk Chocolate Large Easter egg has reduced from 242g to 196g.

Research by Which? has identified some enormous price rises. For example, a Maltesers Truffles Luxury Easter egg (286g) is up from average £8 to £13, which equates to a rise of 62.5 per cent.

At Asda, a Lindt 5 Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate (50g) increased from £2 on average to £3.11 on average – up 55.5 per cent.

At Tesco, a Ferrero Rocher Golden Easter egg (250g) rose £10 to £15 – up 50 per cent.

The sales slump data was collated by retail data experts Reapp, who suggested the fall was driven both by prices and changes to the way supermarkets are allowed to display Easter eggs.

New laws state that Easter eggs must be in specific aisles rather than being placed at checkouts where they are an impulse buy or parents could be pestered into buying.

Reapp said: ‘Easter egg sales have plummeted by 12 per cent, as inflation and legislation melts confectionery performance.

‘Chocolate egg sales have dropped by over 600,000 units sold in the buildup to Easter.’

As a result, it said the total value of Easter Egg sales thus far is down by £200,000 to £11.3million.

James Lamplugh, Reapp Commercial Director, said: ‘The evidence of dwindling Easter egg sales reflects a shift in consumer behaviour. With inflation and a more health-conscious Britain playing a big role in shaping the nation’s baskets.

‘With retailers having to satisfy HFSS (High Fat Salt and Sugar) legislation, Easter eggs are only being sold in dedicated seasonal isles meaning less visibility for the customer, it comes as no surprise to see less shoppers opting for Easter eggs this year.

He added: ‘Our data demonstrates that as prices rise, shoppers are recalibrating their purchasing habits, favouring essential items over Easter eggs.’
