Tom Watson, 54, spoke on ITV’s Good Morning Britain this morning about his staggering weight loss transformation. Now with a new book, the former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party spoke about how ditching sugar and learning about nutrition allowed him to lose eight stone and reverse his diabetes. He called it a “life changing” journey.

Speaking on air, Tom explained: “It’s been about three years now, I’ve more or less kept the weight off.

“A bit of extra cheese eating in lockdown. For me it was a life changing journey, I gave up sugar, I changed my nutrition and it changed the way I think about myself and the way I look at the world and I don’t want to lose that.”

Cutting out sugar from a diet can help lower the number of calories Tom consumed throughout the day.

This means that the overall calorie intake will be decreased and help slimmers to lose weight through a calorie deficit.

The book details how he went from being an overweight sugar addict to someone who takes control of his eating, enabling him to climb Mount Snowdon.

Topping the scales at 22 stone and on medication for type 2 diabetes, Tom changed his nutrition and took up exercise to change his life, also reversing his diabetes.

The book synopsis adds that the MP began putting on the pounds in his early twenties, having developed an appetite for takeaways and alcohol whilst studying at university.

After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2015, Tom decided to regain control over his diet, making healthier choices.

“But my God, looking at them makes me feel good to be alive!”

Another post shared to his feed showed him cycling, an exercise which is great for weight loss.

According to Healthline, biking at a moderate speed can burn up to 298 calories in just 30 minutes.

Tom previously revealed in the New Statesman that he lifts weights and cycles where he can.

He added that he tries to get in his 10,000 steps each day.
