According to law authorities, a 71-year-old church shooting suspect attended services at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, where the shooting occurred, and was accused of killing two people and injuring another.

According to Ware, during a buffet dinner attended by other church members, the man allegedly pulled out a gun and started the fire.

The suspect, a 71-year-old white male, is described as an occasional attendee of the church” who pulled a handgun and began shooting, striking three people. There is no ongoing threat to the community because the suspect acted alone.
Walter Rainey, an 84-year-old Irondale man, died at the scene, according to police. Sarah Yeager, a 75-year-old Pelham woman, died at UAB Hospital. The gunshot injured an 84-year-old Hoover woman who is still in the hospital.
Ware also mentioned police were called at 6:22 p.m., and someone at the gathering “subdued the main suspect and held him down until law enforcement arrived.”
The motive for the shootings was not provided by Ware. He also refused to name the culprit, who was arrested at the Church by police. He added the man’s identity would be kept hidden until prosecutors filed official charges of capital murder against him.
