Statement
Gov. Tim Walz issued a statement Tuesday night, saying hearing about a school shooting “is parents’ biggest fear.”
“My prayers are with the students, parents and teachers whose confidence in that expectation has been shaken today,” he said. “However, we need more than words: we need action. We need action to get guns off the streets and prevent violent crime in the first place. I remain committed to working with officials at all levels of government to seek the change that is needed.”
In a joint statement, the Richfield City Council said, “Richfield has long been a close-knit, safe and welcoming community. Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe in their schools and in their community, and today this safety was threatened.”

Dan Johnson Jr
Dan Johnson Jr., 13, who used to live down the street from Rice, said the killing left him “speechless.”
Cesar Castillejos, who runs the nonprofit organization Richfield Young Life, said he saw Rice walking in his neighborhood Tuesday morning. He frequently drove Rice home from church for the past four years when Rice attended youth group.
When he found out about the shooting and that Rice was involved, he called and texted to no avail: “Call me.”
Castillejos said Rice lived with her grandmother and that she “flourished” when she found purpose and community on the soccer field. He learned of “some problems last week at school” that meant Rice would attend the alternative school.
“He wasn’t perfect. Nobody is,” he said. “He knew the right thing [and] he didn’t always do it. He wanted to grow up. He wanted to be better.”
He told Rice’s friends, “Turn off the noise, remember who he was, and honor him by making decisions that will improve the community.”
Tuesday was Rice’s second day at the South Education Center, said Kris Pulford, head football coach at Richfield High School, where Rice played her freshman and sophomores last season.
Victim
Cortez Rice’s attorney, Jordan Kushner, confirmed that his client’s son was the student who died.
Kushner said Rice has a hearing scheduled in his case and that he will push to get his client out of jail while he continues the case.
“He should be able to come home from jail,” Kushner said. “They murder his son… He would have been taking care of him.”
District 287 Superintendent Sandra Lewandowski spoke at Tuesday’s news conference, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we learned today that there were shots fired outside the South Education Center near the main entrance.”
Lewandowski went on to say that “we express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims.”
