Who is Lena Soulsby ?
A mother of four battling terminal cancer turned down painkillers so she could continue to breastfeed her newborn daughter until her last days.
Brisbane mother Lena Soulsby, 34, spent days crying and struggling to walk as she suffered agonizing pain from stage four cervical cancer.
Doctors had offered to give the brave mother strong medication to ease her burden, but Mrs Soulsby had refused her offers.
She wanted to be able to breastfeed her newborn daughter, Anna, who was only a few months old at the time.
Family
Mrs Soulsby breastfed her daughter until she was unable to do so and was forced into hospice care on 24 March. She died several days later, on March 27.
“There is nothing closer or more loving than breastfeeding,” said her husband, Robert. ‘It’s a special connection between mom and baby.’
Mrs Soulsby leaves behind her husband Rob and her four children Anna, aged six months, Jacob, aged eight, Elizabeth, aged 10, and Lukas, aged 12.
Soulsby said she hasn’t “stopped crying” since her wife passed away and she recalled the last moments shared with her loved one.
Her family stood around her hospital bed, holding her hand, hugging and kissing her as they felt the life drain from Mrs. Soulsby’s body.
Mr. Soulsby opened a Gofundme page where he revealed the telltale symptom that Ms. Soulsby had been suffering from before she was diagnosed with the deadly cancer.
‘In October 2021 I took a break from work to welcome our new baby into the world, my wife and I were so happy!’ he wrote.

‘The doctors said that after her pregnancy she may still have some bleeding for the next 6-8 weeks, this is normal.
“[Nine] weeks later, on Christmas Eve, we had to go to the ER because she was bleeding excessively.”
Doctors carried out a series of scans before diagnosing Ms Soulsby with stage four cervical cancer on Christmas Day.
“Lena didn’t want to go to the hospital so we decided to take care of her at home, she decided not to take stronger medication and suffer pain so she could breastfeed her newborn baby,” Soulsby wrote.
“Lena said that she would rather feed her baby to the grave than take stronger medication and stop breastfeeding (I have a lot of respect for Lena for this decision).”
Gofundme
Mrs. Soulsby then received radiation to treat a cancerous lump on her head. The treatment left her weak and unable to get past the bathroom.
“We tried home care for as long as possible, but Lena’s pain was so severe that she decided to go into hospice,” Soulsby wrote.
‘[Three] days later she passed away herself (only 3 months after diagnosis) with her mother, husband (me) and our 4 children by her side.’
Gofundme has raised $23,929 of its $50,000 goal.
