Susan Williams Antonia Stockard was born on February 13, 1944, in Manhattan, New York. Until his death in the late 1960s, her father, Lester Napier Stockard, was a shipping businessman. Mary Alice, her mother, was an Irish native and devout Catholic. Channing has only one sister, Lesly Stockard, who was the mayor of Palm Beach, Florida at one time. Both sisters were raised in Manhattan before departing for educational or personal reasons.

Channing attended Chapin School in New York before transferring to Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. She attended Radcliffe College in Massachusetts after Madeira School, where she majored in History and Literature and graduated in 1965. She enrolled in HB Studio, where she received acting training, to hone her skills.

Her off-Broadway acting career began in 1969, and she made her Broadway debut in 1971. Her television debut was as the mad painter in the children’s educational series Sesame Street. In 1973, she had her first starring role in a television movie, The Girl Most Likely to, which was well received.

After appearing in several feature films as a guest star, she landed a leading role in the 1975 comedy film The Fortune. With high expectations, the film underperformed, much to the surprise of many, including Channing herself. Following her disappointment, she co-starred in the 1977 television series Lucan with Ned Beatty.

She was later cast in the film Grease in 1977, but it was not released until 1978. This was her breakthrough film, and her performance earned her her first career award. After appearing in a number of films from the 1980s to the 1990s, she was cast as a guest star in the television series The West Wing before becoming a regular in 2001.
