Who was Bjana James?
The crime spree comes during Mayor Eric Adams’ first few months in office. The former New York cop vowed to crack down on the influx of incidents on the city’s streets and subway system, which has seen a spate of violent incidents in recent weeks. The policies of former Mayor Bill De Blasio contributed to the current crime wave, experts said.
The New York subway has been ground zero for the simmering crime wave after an alarming 73.3 percent rise in underground incidents, including 182 in February alone.
Hate crimes have also doubled since last year: attacks on Asians more than tripled and complaints against the elderly jumped 54 percent over the same period last year, from 134 to 207 incidents.
A recent poll revealed that nearly 75 percent of all New York City voters consider crime a “very serious” problem.

Loved ones left candles outside James’s apartment building on Saturday as family and friends gathered to mourn the sudden loss.
A childhood friend, identified as Rachelle, said James “loved everyone and you felt it in his presence.”
As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been announced.
