Former MLB shortstop Julio Lugo has died, his family told ESPN Deportes’ Enrique Rojas. The cause of death is believed to have been a heart attack. Lugo, who was 45 years old, was going to turn 46 on Tuesday.


Julio Cesar Lugo was a Dominican professional baseball shortstop. Lugo was the older brother of baseball pitcher Ruddy Lugo. He played in Major League Baseball for the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves. Wikipedia

Lugo spent part of 12 seasons (2000-2011) in the Major Leagues and ended up being a bit of a traveler. He played for the Astros for parts of four seasons and then the Rays for parts of four seasons. He later spent part of three seasons with the Red Sox and had stints of a year or less with the Dodgers, Braves, Orioles and Cardinals.


Born in the Dominican Republic, Lugo went to high school in Brooklyn and later played for Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma. He was selected in the 43rd round in 1994. Starting in Baja-A in 1995, Lugo slowly but steadily advanced through the minors and made his major league debut in 2000 at age 24.

In his 12 years, Lugo hit .269 / .333 / .384 (87 OPS +) with 1,279 hits, 238 doubles, 34 triples, 80 home runs, 475 RBIs, 688 runs, 198 stolen bases and 13.5 WAR. He was the daily shortstop for the Red Sox in 2007 when they won the World Series. During that four-game Fall Classic sweep over the Rockies, Lugo was 5 of 13 (.385) with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

After his last MLB game, Lugo kept playing, participating in the Dominican Winter League, the Caribbean Series, and then independent ball in 2013.

Personal life

Lugo and his wife, Surki, had a son and two daughters. He also had an older son with his ex-wife.

On April 30, 2003, Lugo was arrested outside Minute Maid Park after an incident in which he allegedly beat his wife. He was formally charged with misdemeanor assault and later acquitted after his wife testified that she did not intend to hurt her.

Lugo died of a heart attack on November 15, 2021, a day before his 46th birthday.

Amateur career

Lugo attended Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, New York, where he hit .350. He also played sand field baseball for the Youth Service League in Brooklyn, New York, whose alumni include Manny Ramirez and Shawon Dunston. Lugo performed at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma.

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros selected Lugo in the 43rd round of the 1994 MLB draft. He signed with them on May 17, 1995. Lugo made his MLB debut with the Astros on April 15, 2000. After Lugo was arrested for assaulting his wife in May 2003, the Astros released him .

Tampa Bay Devil Rays


After being released by the Astros in 2003, Lugo signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, where he hit 15 home runs during the season, including four home runs over four nights in a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays in late September.
