Who was Kyrell Matthews?
Defenseless’ Kyrell Matthews was left with 41 broken ribs and internal injuries at the time of his death in October 2019 after weeks of cruelty at the hands of Kemar Brown and his mother Phylesia Shirley, the Old Bailey has heard.
Brown, 28, was convicted of murder after a trial earlier this month, while Shirley, 24, was acquitted of murder but found guilty on the alternative charge of involuntary manslaughter.
They appeared side by side in the dock on Friday when Brown was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison while Shirley was jailed for 13 years.
The toddler, who did not speak, could be heard crying and screaming in distressing audio files taken from Shirley’s phone and played by jurors during the trial.
Murder
The man who murdered his ex-girlfriend’s two-year-old son, Kyrell Matthews has been jailed for life with a minimum sentence of 25 years.
Multiple recordings taken during the last weeks of his life picked up the sound of Kyrell being hit repeatedly, with Brown saying, “Shut up” and, “You have to spoil the fun.”
Another recording captured Shirley hitting her son and causing her to collapse in anguish.

Prosecutor Edward Brown QC told the jury that her mother put her relationship with Brown above that of her own son.
The couple, who were unemployed at the time of Kyrell’s murder, were cannabis users and are believed to have been visited at least once by social services.
Investigation
Paying tribute to Kyrell outside court after the couple were sentenced, his paternal grandmother, Christine Ernest, said he was “the most loving child, always smiling”.
Jurors were not told police had been called for a previous domestic incident, but no offenses were identified and Kyrell was said to appear “safe and sound.”
A passerby alerted officers on July 17, 2019 after hearing screams and screams coming from his apartment, with a female voice saying, ‘Stop punching my face.’
It followed an attack in May 2019 when Kyrell sustained a major injury to the side of his face and spent five days at Croydon University Hospital.
The hospital carried out an investigation and found Shirley’s explanation that the boy had fallen off a sofa and hit his head on a high chair was “plausible”, police said.
