Wembley FC have announced that their goalkeeper Raheem Belgrave has died at the age of 29.

The star died after drowning in a river in his homeland.

Causes of Death

A report from the Trinidad Daily Express stated that the soccer ace was swimming in the Paria River at Blanchisseuse on Sunday morning when he disappeared underwater.

Belgrave was part of a group of people walking through the area.

Local police confirmed that his friends finally pulled him out of the river, but that he was in a “state of unconsciousness.”

The report added that once his body was removed from the river, his friends went to the Blanchisseusse police station, where an ambulance was called.

But unfortunately the former stopper had already passed away.

Authorities said an autopsy was ordered to confirm Belgrave’s cause of death.

Trinidadian Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley had declared on Saturday that the rivers would remain open but “with serious restrictions” including not drinking alcohol or cooking.

Belgrave signed for Wembley FC, who play in the Combined Counties League Premier Division North, in 2018.

Statement

A statement from the club read: “It is with terrible sadness that we bring the news of the death of Raheem ‘Birdie’ Belgrave.

“We are shocked and saddened and send our condolences to his family and closest friends of his.”

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association also said: “The TTFA expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Raheem Belgrave, who passed away on Sunday.

“Raheem was a member of the U-17 men’s national team in 2008-2009 under then coach Anton Corneal. He was the son of former National Team coach David Muhammad. May he rest in peace.”

Belgrave played for his hometown side San Juan Jabloteh during the 2016/17 season.

He was part of the team that finished runner-up in the CONCACAF Caribbean Club Championship in 2017.

He then signed for Queen’s Park in Trinidad in 2017 before heading to Wembley in 2018.

Belgrave played 35 times for Wembley over the last three seasons.

His former teammate Jaiden Babalola led the tributes on social media, tweeting: “Couldn’t be a worse start to 2022. Trying to stay positive.

“To a brother, friend, teammate. To our football training sessions, gym sessions, bike rides around London and train rides.”

While another fan tweeted: “Surprised and saddened to hear this, met him a few years ago at a test match, kept in touch…great young man.

“Heartbreaking news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
