From Father of the Bride, to Cheaper by the Dozen, to Pink Panther, Steve Martin has been a beloved household name for decades. Many generations adore his comedy and classic charm. Now, the actor has teamed up with Martin Short and Selena Gomez to not only star in a new Hulu show but to produce it as well.
Only Murders in the Building gives a new take on a murder mystery, and Steve Martin never fails to entertain the viewers. However, some may not realize that Martin has been doing all of this through his late seventies. Currently 76, we can’t help but wonder what he does to look and feel his best in his late seventies. Even more so to continue producing great entertainment. Turns out, Steve Martin is a vegetarian!
This diet was confirmed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The actor also once took it to Twitter to acknowledge his vegetarianism. On a flight, Martin received a small helping of celery and chips. He snapped a picture of this snack and tweeted, “This is what airlines think vegetarians eat.”
All jokes aside, becoming vegetarian does have its plus sides. For starters, it may have a positive effect on your overall health, versus those who consume meat.
According to research shown at the European Congress on Obesity, participants of the study who ate a solely-vegetarian diet showed “significantly lower” levels of 13 biomarkers, biological molecules that researchers use to measure signs of a condition or disease. Some biomarkers included total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, as well as apolipoprotein A and apolipoprotein B (both linked to cardiovascular disease). Other markers were associated with liver function, kidney function, and cancer cells.

A diet high in rice produce, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, may help to prevent cardiovascular disease. Meanwhile, consuming meats high in saturated fat can lead to negative impacts on your heart. When eaten in excess, processed meats (such as hot dogs or bacon) and red meats may contribute to inflammation in your body. This may lead to damaged cells that could lead to cancer and other diseases.
Apart from a healthy heart and low inflammation, giving up meat may also help you shed a couple of pounds. For example, eating red meat is a pretty heavy meal. It has saturated fats, which can easily pair up with the red meat’s calories. Therefore, causing some significant weight gain if eaten regularly. It’s important to not consume too much red meat. However, to still make sure you’re getting an adequate amount of protein in your diet.
With that being said, by giving up meat, you’re giving up a large source of protein. Thankfully, there are many delicious recipes to still get your protein intake without meat.
With vegetarian options gaining popularity in the fast-food industry and restaurant business, the switch won’t be as difficult as you may think if you decide to take that route. Just be sure you’re getting your proper nutrient intake—and maybe bring your own snacks when you’re traveling by plane.
